Why Choose Floorboards Potomac 5" Wide Plank
3/8" thick 5 cross ply Engineered Construction. The layers of the 5 ply center core are kiln dried and heat and pressure compacted. This gives the Potomac Maple Plank its lifetime structural guarantee. Engineered floors with Cross-Ply construction are the most stable wood floors available.
Precision milled 4 sided tongue and groove for a precision fitted installation. The tongue and grooves of the Potomac Maple Plank are milled to such standards, they are considered exact fit. This is necessary to keep the surface of the individual planks even once installed.
4 sided Micro-bevel adds dimension to the 5" wide plank profile. Each plank is a full 5" in width. A wider, more popular profile in many cases. The Micro-Bevel not only assists in eliminating over-wood from plank to plank, it adds dimension and a level of texture to the fully installed floor.
3mm thick Maple top wear layer. Although wood floors today are typically not sanded and refinished (they are typically just refinished), the 3mm wear layer allows for sanding and refinishing if necessary.
Available in natural Maple or a variety of designer stains. Today's most popular stain tonals are now available with the Potomac Plank, in addition to the traditional natural Maple unstained variety.
Certified 11 step finishing process. 8 coats of German manufactured Treffic Aluminum Oxide Finish are applied and U.V cured. German finishing methods are know to be the most exacting in the wood flooring industry and have been for some time.
25 year finish and lifetime structural warranty. Not only does the flooring manufacturer warrant the finish, the finish manufacturer (Treffic Corp) does as well. Wood floors provide years of service and then can be re-finished as needed. The structure of the floor itself is guaranteed for the life of use. It will not delaminate under normal interior use conditions.
Select and better Maple grains. Clearer, premium grains have been selected for use in the Potomac Plank Collection. "Select and Better" grains are a grading term for the wood used in this collection.
No wax easy to clean. A "never needs waxing" 8 coat finish treatment means your new hardwood floor will be easy to maintain. Simply sweep on a regular basis and dry mop for deeper cleanings. No need to apply polishers or waxes.
Flexible installation options. The Potomac Plank is approved for all 3 installation methods. Glue-down, staple down or floating installations over concrete or wood, on all grade levels.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Potomac 5" Wide Plank Collection.
Q. I need a floor that I can install in my basement using a floating installation method over an underlayment. Can I use this floor, and will it void the warranty?
A. The Potomac Maple plank is approved for use in basement areas using a floating installation over an approved underlayment (listed in the accessory section under each specfic color in this collection). The warranty will not be void if installed in a basement area providing the concrete floor does not have a moisture problem.
Q. How long are the planks in the Potomac Collection?
A. The majority of the planks in this collection will be 48" in length. An selected assortment of shorter length planks are included as well for use in the middle of the rooms being installed. This gives the appeal of a true random length hardwood floor.
Q. What grade of wood is used in the Potomac Collection?
A. The official grading term is called Select & Better. This is an industry term that refers to the premium cleaner grade chosen from the maple tree.
Q. My installer told me to buy something with a minimum of 5 plies in an engineered floor. What is he referring to and will this floor meet that spec?
A. Your installer is referring to the amount of plies that are cross layered and fused together to make up the core. He is correct in requesting 5 plies minimum. The Potomac Maple plank has 5 cross plied layers and thus meets your installer's request for a 5 ply floor. Many floors only come with 3. The more plies, the more substantial sounding the floor will be. A higher number of plies also increases the floor's ability to withstand environmental extremes.
Q. Is the Potomac Maple Plank collection a solid wood floor?
A. It is an all wood floor. It is not one solid piece of wood all the way through to the back of the plank. The Potomac Maple Plank is an engineered hardwood floor. This means it is a real wood floor but with a core that has various layers of wood that are fused together (cross plied) and pressure compacted. This process results in the most durable and stable type of hardwood floor available. Engineered floors can be installed in more areas and with more installation methods due to the improved stability over solid hardwood floors.
Q. Are these full 5" wide planks or are there several smaller sections that make up the 5" width?
A. This floor is a full 5" wide plank. The width of the Potomac Maple is one full piece it is not made up of smaller sections.
Q. I do not want a floor that has to be sanded or refinished or waxed. Will this one work?
A. The Potomac Maple Plank collection is pre-finished and ready to be installed and used. No sanding, no additional top-coats are needed and no future waxing to maintain the floor. Just standard cleaning and sweeping (For more information on its care, see the care guide on this site for the Potomac Maple Plank)
Q. This floor is in my budget and I found the color I want. Is this something we can install ourselves? We are not construction experts but we did put in our own tile entry way and I painted the living room and hallway.
A. The Potomac maple plank is installed by do it yourself homeowners as well as by the professional flooring installer. Many of our customers install the floors themselves. On average it will take you 1 day to complete 200-250 square feet of this flooring. It does not take a large amount of skill to install most of the pre-finished floors we offer. While doing it yourself can save a decent amount of money it does take some time and labor to get the job done.
The Potomac Plank collection is approved for all 3 installation methods. Glue down, nail down, or floating installations. The Potomac Maple Plank installation can be performed by both Professional Installers and Do It Yourself Homeowners alike.
The Potomac Plank series can be installed over radiant heat floors as well. It is recommended for installation below grade, on grade, and above grade areas of the home.
